Dropout Early Warning System (DEWS) – Experience from Tanzania

To help break the cycle of secondary school dropout, the USAID-funded Waache Wasome (“Let them Learn”) project introduced partner schools to WEI/B’s evidence-informed DEWS model. Rooted in human-centered design, DEWS takes a holistic view of various stressors within a student’s school, family, and social environment — and capacitates educators to identify these issues and apply case-management procedures to support students and prevent potential dropout. The success of our approach led to the Government of Tanzania adapting and integrating DEWS into the national online School Information System, which is used by all schools in the country.
