Improving ART Adherence in Adolescents through Increased Caregiver Support in Uganda
In Uganda, like elsewhere in the region, adolescents living with HIV (ALHIV) face a number of adherence-related challenges including weak caregiver/parental support. Informed by global evidence and program feedback, WEI/Bantwana layered a strategic mix of economic strengthening, treatment literacy, and positive parenting on facility-based Peer Support Groups for adolescents living with HIV to improve adherence, retention, and overall wellbeing while encouraging greater self-efficacy among ALHIV and strengthening family resilience. The technical brief highlights the process, findings, and considerations for scaling this effective approach, which reinforces the efficacy of a well-coordinated referral network and case management approach.
